On Monday morning, leaders from the Democratic Party and the city at large gathered at the Southside on Lamar’s Blue Room to rally around Texas House of Representatives candidate Eric Johnson.

Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III -an early supporter of Johnson- kicked off the press conference and voiced his enthusiasm regarding the candidate.  “We believe in Eric Johnson,” said Dr. Haynes, “a homegrown hero.”  He went on to say “This young man (Johnson) represents so much of what we believe can be the birthing of a new era in District 100.”

The Johnson press conference served as a sign of unity around the 34 year-old candidate who looks to represent Texas House District 100 that includes West Dallas, East Dallas, and South Dallas.  State Rep. Terri Hodge currently holds the seat, but pled guilty to falsifying federal tax information last week ending her political career.

Dr. Haynes was followed to the podium by Dallas County and Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins and State Representative Rafael Anchia who was already thinking ahead.  “We need to help (Johnson) on March 2nd to win the primary,” said Anchia, “and we need to help him because there will likely be a special election.”  Anchia went on to say “We want Eric to be sworn in as soon as possible,” to a thunderous applause from those assembled.

When it was his turn to speak, Johnson saluted Hodge for her service in District 100.  “I want to take this time to thank State Representative Terri Hodge for her years of service not only to District 100, but to the State of Texas,” Johnson said.  “But today, I’m here to tell you….that starting right now, we must come together to move District 100 forward,” said Johnson, who said he looks forward to working with leaders at every level of government.

Johnson will continue to campaign ahead of the March 2nd Primary, though State Rep. Hodge has suspended her campaign.  Hodge’s name will still appear on the ballot and Johnson is urging District 100 voters to turnout and cast their vote in support of his candidacy.
