The 25th Anniversary of Hoop-It-Up Tour made a stop in Oak Cliff at Southwest Center Mall July 19th. This year’s Hoop-It-Up commemorates the 1989 inaugural season started by the NBA, which was played in the West End. The Hoop It UP tour, owned and operated by NA Sports Group, has been touring around the country, with various cities hosting their own tournaments.

The Dallas Tournament in junction with the One Love Music Festival, which showcases local talent. This year’s contest and concert united spectators and athletes with an entertaining venue to coincide with the 3 on 3 Tournament.

Sponsers included Dallas’s own Mayor Mike Rawlings and Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins, Camp Wisdom Now, Grow South Initiative, Wilson and Randolph Holdings,, One Love Music Festival, and many others. A variety of vendors provided services ranging from bounces houses to barbeque, wireless dealers and community organizations.

The event took place on the southwest corner parking lot. Event organizers David King and Ted Harts coordinated nearly a dozen courts and full sound and stage. Hosted in part by DRe eMCee, of Major Prophets Entertainment, and DJ Snoop, the atmosphere surrounding the event was entertaining to say the least. With the cooperation of a most unusual Texas summer day, cloud cover made it the temperature perfect for an outdoor event with highs in the 80s.

The games started promptly at 9:00 a.m., as teams battled it out for the crown. Squads were made up from ages starting as young as 8, to adult, with brackets broken down by age, level, and skill.  In honor of our veterans, there was also a civil servant 3-point shootout. The events concluded close to 4:00 p.m. with the Mayor Pro Tem Atkins and Mayor Rawlings giving closing remarks, whom even shared that he participated in the opening day Hoop It Up in 1989.

The One Love Music Festival and 25th Anniversary Hoop It Up provided the South Oak Cliff area with quite an amusing affair. The family fun festivities are a glimpse of what’s coming for the Southern region. Mr. King and Mr. Harts goal was that this experience will be a catalyst in bringing more economic development and community oriented entertainment to the Southern Oak Cliff area.

The Southwest Center Mall also hosted a graduation and hair show the same evening presented by Southwest Center’s own MJ’s Beauty Academy. In August “The UniverSOUL Circus” will be bringing the big top to Southwest Center Mall, formerly known as Red Bird, parking lot. Southern Oak Cliff looks to be building it’s own growth and happenings, mirroring the highly acclaimed North Oak Cliff development, so take stop by and take notice as more coverage and highlights will be coming from the Southern Oak Cliff sector.
