Texas Organizing Project Urges Not to Rush Charter Writing Process

  • Sharebar

DSN Newswire  The following is a statement by Suzette Wiseman, Dalllas ISD parent and a schools campaign leader with the Texas Organizing Project:

“DISD has serious problems that require serious solutions. Rushing to get a home-rule charter on the November ballot isn’t a serious solution.

“There’s a reason the state legislature decided to allow up to one year for the drafting a home-rule charter: it takes time to devise a document to govern a school district with 160,000 students. If a charter is to be written at all, commission members must take their time to do it right.

“The charter commission first should dedicate a substantial part of the year to collect input from  parents, students and teachers through listening sessions to find out what they would like to see changed in their school district.

“If a charter is written, it would be irresponsible of the commission to forgo community input and rush a process that has never been tried in our state. DISD families like mine deserve a process that is carefully followed with widespread community input. And we will be there at every step in the process to make sure that it happens, starting tonight.
