Lamar street in Dallas is such a tale of two cities, but the Lamar Street Festival could be the beginning of something new, inclusive and positive.

For years, there has been talk about “under the bridge” on Lamar street and that talk referred to the homeless, the drunks, the drug dealers and the deals that occur under the bridge. However on the other end of Lamar , there is DART, Mcdonalds , Bank of America, CVS and now The Omni Hotel at the Dallas Convention Center and it clearly is the hottest hotel in the region. Thanks to people like, former Mayor Tom Leppert and his vision of a convention center hotel, Jack Matthews of Matthews SW who built and developed the hotel and former city manager, Mary Suhm who followed through with city services and staff along with current city manager A. C. Gonzales, that end of Lamar is “jumping”.

Well now the Lamar Street Festival  that will take place near the 100 year old Sears Building, which is now known as South Side on Lamar and the largest loft complex in America attempts to bring both ends of Lamar together. It is set for Saturday October 19 , 12noon – 10pm. It will feature artist like Jennifer Morgan, The Cedars Open Studios , Cedar Social , Full Circle, The Opening Bell, Nylo Hotel and super star entertainer Erykah Badu. I love Erykah and what she represents, local, different and real. I met Erykah years ago working in the Steve Harvey Comedy Club as a waitress and a graduate of DISD’s Booker T. Washington High School and look at her now, internationally known and respected.

She will close out the Lamar Street Festival Saturday night and it’s fitting because the festival is what Erykah is. Please come out and tell friends about it and join me in one of Dallas’ attempts to not only “Grow South” (Mayor Rawlings) but connecting both sides. It should be fun and family friendly and represents what I think Mayor Rawlings is selling around the country about Dallas. CONNECTED on both ends. See you Saturday.

Just my thoughts……
