SXSW Vs Coachella: the Battle for Best Music Scene

  • Sharebar

There are few festivals that music lovers agree are the best around. In the United States, festivals Coachella and South by South West (SXSW) battle for the title of best. There are many attractions with both, and in the end it might be up to the fan’s preference.

What Sets Coachella and SXSW Apart

Among factors like location, ticket price, and who’s playing that year, there are some features that can have an attendee choosing one over the other. Here are some things to consider:

- Getting There: First of all, location is a factor. Coachella is one of the biggest festivals on the west coast. It dwarfs Seattle’s Bumbershoot music festival. The Empire Polo Club in Indio, California houses the three-day Coachella festival each year in April. The SXSW festival, on the other hand, is held in Austin, Texas the month before. Die hard music fans can certainly choose to to go to both, but between expenses and other obligations many people are faced with the tough decision of choosing either one of the other.

- The Lineup: Surely the most important factor is who will be at which festival that year. Both festivals are able to book many of the top performers in rock, pop, and hip hop. But when someone’s favorite band is playing at one festival and not the other, that makes their decision pretty easy.

- Other Events: While Coachella is known as a music festival, SXSW is more than just music. Among some of the best bands in the world, the SXSW stage is shared with independent movie screenings, stand up comedians and live podcast tapings, and you should definitely check them out. Music is of course a huge part of SXSW, especially with the booming music scene and many great bands in Austin already, but SXSW is more of a celebration of everything creative.

So Who Wins?

Every year, both festivals put on incredible shows with talented guests and thousands of happy fans. Strictly for music, Coachella never fails to please. On the other hand, someone looking to attend a festival, see some concerts, but also go to movie screenings, check out the latest in technology and art, and see live comedy should definitely check out the SXSW festival. Both festivals have become their own culture, their own community, and their own unique experience for music fans around the world who travel to their favorite festival each year.
