CitySquare’s 18th Annual Community Prayer Breakfast, entitled “For the Good of the City” will take place on Thursday, April 18th at Dallas Market Center.

Mayor Cory Booker

For 18 years, CitySquare has hosted a community prayer breakfast that brings Dallas leadership and citizens together for powerful discussions and prayer. This year, CitySquare will be joined by Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker as keynote speaker. Mayor Booker, a strong advocate for those in need, recently lived on food stamps for a week in solidarity with those who have to eat on the less than $30 a week and to garner attention for the problem of food insecurity both in his city and nationally. Food insecurity is a problem addressed by several of CitySquare’s initiatives including a busy food pantry and one of the state’s largest summer feeding programs.

Mayor Booker’s beaming smile and easy style coupled with a stellar record in office, and his much-lauded heroism in rushing into a burning house to rescue a neighbor, have made him one of America’s most popular current mayors. He recently told a packed audience at Rider University that courage is not running into a burning building but that it is accepting the conditions as they are and then trying to change them.   ”You only have the right to complain if you have the heart to help,” the mayor said, “You need active engagement. I have unhinged hope. There is nothing we cannot do in America. It is in our DNA!”

Our own Mayor Rawlings will introduce his fellow mayor at the event.

CitySquare exists to fight the root causes of poverty by partnering with those in need. The organization provides individuals and families with the comprehensive services and opportunities they need to work their way beyond poverty into viability and self-sufficiency. With the core values of community, faith, justice and stewardship, CitySquare has grown from a small food pantry in 1988 to a broad community development organization focusing on four key areas:  hunger, health, housing and hope.
