5 Great Chest Exercices

  • Sharebar

When targeting the chest muscles during a workout, it’s essential to know the proper exercises in order to get the best results. The chest is broken down into two main muscles: the pectoralis major and the pectoralis minor, better know as the pectoral muscles or pecs. In order to get a well-rounded chest workout, both sets of pecs need to be utilized. Here are a few exercises that do just that:

1. Decline Bench Press

The decline bench press is one of the best ways to give the pecs a proper workout. It works much the same way as the standard bench press (which is also a great chest exercise), but the declined angle helps isolate the lower pectoral muscles. It can be a bit tricky the first time, so always have a friend spotting, keep the weight low, and move slowly.

2. Incline Dumbbell Flys

Dumbbell flys are another great chest exercise. Incline dumbbell flys in particular help isolate and exercise the upper pectorals. A general rule is, if the exercise is inclined it works out the upper pecs and if it’s declined it works out the lower. One thing to keep in mind with this exercise is to keep both arms moving in unison during the “fly” movement. This will ensure equal weight distribution across the chest.

3. Chest Press Machine

There are many benefits as well as drawbacks to using weight machines in a work out. As far as chest exercises go, the chest press machine may be the most efficient. Not only is there more control when using a chest press machine, but that control equals more time to isolate the muscles during every repetition. This makes the chest press exercise a great exercise to do at the end of a workout.

4. Push-ups

They may seem old fashioned, but push-ups are one of the best chest exercises around. The best part is, they can be done anywhere without the need of extra equipment. In order to isolate the upper and lower pectorals, try using the seat of a chair or ottoman to do incline or decline push-ups. With all chest exercises, it’s important to move slowly to get the most out of the workout.

5. Chest Dips

Hanging chest dips are yet another excellent chest workout. This particular exercise takes a little practice in terms of balance and strength, but there are weight machines that can help. And, for a variation on this exercise, try adding some weight using a dip belt. As always, play it safe, especially with exercises like this which rely completely on body strength for the execution.

So, whether it’s isolating and exercising the upper or lower pectorals or just getting an overall chest work out, the above exercises are a great place to start.
