4 Steps to a Creepy Crawly Bug Lollipop

  • Sharebar

If you look up bug lollipops on any search engine you’ll find a number of sites that describe them as “all the rage.”  I wouldn’t go quite that far.  Their rareness, rather than their popularity, is what makes them so fun.  And they are fun:  you haven’t seen a reaction until you’ve handed someone a lollipop with a scorpion embedded in it.

But how are these creepy confections made?  It’s really as simple as 1-2-3.

1.  Find edible insects
Most insects are edible.  Ants, termites, crickets, and other insects aren’t just edible; in many parts of the world they’re an important food staple or a sought-after delicacy.  But let’s face it.  Going to the trouble of buying or making a lollipop with a termite inside lacks spunk.  Why go for an ant when you can put something really yucky inside?

Hotlix, the company that first created bug-infested confections, makes them with scorpions, worms, and all kinds of inedible-seeming insects.  But the ones they use have been bred to be edible, so the bug lollipops you can buy at a novelty candy store like are perfectly safe.  If you’re going to make your own, you need to be cautious about your source to ensure that your bugs are also safe.

2.  Make hard candy
Hard candy is so named because it’s solid, not because it’s difficult to make.  Here are some instructions, and here is an easy-to-watch video that demonstrates the process.  Hard candy can be cooled flat, in shapes, or in forms to make lollipops, and you can insert a bug into any of these confections.  The easiest way to make a great novelty candy, though, is to plan to form the candy into lollipops (or suckers).

3.  Prepare the Bug
The hardest part of this process is staging the bug for encapsulation in the candy.  This is done by fixing the bug to the end of the lollipop stick that’s going to be inside the candy, but it’s important to make sure that it’s positioned in such a way that it’s going to create impact.  For example, if you’re embedding a scorpion, don’t let it curl up.  Ensure that the body position is aggressive, with legs spread and the tail poised as though it might sting.  (For inspiration, check out how celebrities are posed at the Hollywood Wax Museum!)

4.  Make the lollipop
After you have your hard candy ready four pouring and your bug positioned on the lollipop stick, simply pour the candy mixture into the mold, ensure that the stick is centered, and let the candy cool.  When it hardens, you’ll have a wonderful gag gift – or a tasty treat for yourself.

Just be sure to brush your teeth after you eat it!
