The 5 Most Popular DJs on the Planet

  • Sharebar

Although there are various references regarding the top DJs of the world in electronic dance music, DJmag.com is the most referenced and reputable source for information about EDM and those who make it. Based on other electronic music dedicated Web sites, the general consensus about the world’s five best DJs is as follows:

1. David Guetta

Even though DJmag ranks him at number five, the French house DJ is extremely popular among music listeners today – his single “Titanium” featuring Sia was widely commercially successful and sold millions of copies worldwide. However, because of these platinum pop tracks, fans have shown resentment towards Guetta for selling out. Regardless, Guetta continues to produce house music that attracts subcultural electronic music lovers.

2. Tiesto

Tiesto is a veteran progressive house and trance DJ from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Due to the popularity of trance, the Athens Olympic Committee chose Tiesto to perform at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games. Tiesto is known for spectacular concerts by using laser effects and pleasing the audience. Recently, Tiesto has pushed trance away by focusing on progressive house and electro genres. Consequently, Tiesto’s change earned him appreciation from fans. New Year’s Eve adds onto Tiesto’s popular concerts. On New Year’s Eve 2012, Tiesto performed in Atlantic City.

3. Armin van Buuren

Another DJ from the Netherlands, Armin van Buuren is a champion of trance music. DJmag.com lists him as the world’s top DJ, even though other sources disagree. Similar to Tiesto, Armin van Buuren provides world-class entertainment to concert attendees through uplifting beats and lighting effects. New Year’s Eve is an important night because van Buuren puts on a show for fans. On New Year’s Eve 2012, van Buuren performed at Pier 36 in New York City. Van Buuren stated that dance music is changing due to the rise of electro and house genres, but is glad to be the king of DJs according to djmag.com.

4. Deadmau5

Canadian DJ Deadmau5 (pronounced “Deadmouse”) from Toronto gained popularity with his electro and house styles of electronic dance music as trance lost ground. Recently, Deadmau5 performed with the Foo Fighters at this year’s Grammy Awards.

5. Skrillex

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Skrillex is gaining popularity with his dubstep style. In contrast to house and trance, dubstep is an oddball in terms of popularity as a style for electronic dance music. However, Skrillex adds his unique charm to make dubstep enjoyable coming from a background as a guitarist in the screamo band From First to Last. Because of unique approaches, Skrillex has six Grammy Awards under his belt. Due to his popularity, Skrillex produced a tune that won him an Annie Award for Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph.”

The explosive popularity of electronic dance music has also propped up some other industries – namely festivals and all of the vendors associated with them. For example, a popular Canadian festival dubbed Shambhala is fraught with tapestry salesman and portable bars (in fact, if you’re interested in tending one, visit this website). This means that the amazing success of these DJs, and others like them, is not only good for a party, it may help spur economic recovery forward as well.
