Students at S.S. Conner Elementary School combine creativity and gardening at Texas Discovery Gardens’ latest art exhibition, Through the Eyes of a Child.

For the past two years, the children have been participating in a Thriving Minds after school program led by Audrey Easley. Texas Discovery Gardens’ curator, Janet Reynolds, has been facilitating art projects with the students. The students have also been preparing school grounds for new organic gardens.

“When asked what they would do, if they could do anything during the program,” Reynolds said, “the children answered, ‘Go outside! And paint!’ This began an organic native garden project in partnership with Texas Discovery Gardens.”

With help from several organizations, students have begun garden renovations in an inner courtyard to incorporate shade tolerant native plants. They continue this spring at a sunny spot outside of the school walls to create the Woodall Foundation Community Garden, which will include vegetables and pollinator-friendly plants.

This winter, based upon their experiences gardening outdoors, the students have created murals, drawings and photographs.

“The exhibit invites us to see the wonder and magic of connecting with nature, through the eyes of a child,” Reynolds said.

The show runs January 26, 2013 through April 28, 2013. An Opening Reception runs Saturday, Jan. 26, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Artists will be on hand to talk about their work. The reception is held in conjunction with our Travel to the Tropics! Family Festival. Live tropical music accompanies the reception. Admission is $8/adults, $6/ages 60+, and $4/ages 3 to 11.

“When we work in the garden, we help the environment and ourselves by getting oxygen.” – Arriana, Fifth Grade.

Texas Discovery Gardens is a nonprofit educational organization supported, in part, by funds from the Dallas Park and Recreation Department.
