Texans Can Academies, a nonprofit charter high school organization serving mostly at-risk youth, today announced that through the generous support of their donors they are opening their ten campuses across the state for the second consecutive year to provide cost-free tutoring to 12th graders who failed to graduate because they did not pass one or two areas of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) tests. “Operation Success” will offer instruction Mondays through Thursdays from June 11 through July 6. Instruction times will vary by campus.
The tutoring is open to any Texas 12th grade student who failed one or two subjects in their TAKS test, registers and is committed to attending instruction each day during the four-week period. A complimentary meal will be provided to every student.
Following their mission to provide the highest quality education for all students, Texans Can decided to offersolutions for 12th graders who did not graduate from high school because they failed to pass one or more of the TAKS tests. The classes were created to offer assistance to any child whose goal is to graduate from high school and not become a dropout statistic.
According to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), during the 2010-2011 school year 22,578 or one in 12 Texas high school seniors failed one or more of the required tests used to determine graduation eligibility. Texans Can Academies is dedicated to providing the highest quality education for all students and views “Operation Success” as a natural extension of their commitment to children who deserve a second chance at graduating from high school. The initiative will provide emphasis in the math and science portions of the test because those are the two subjects students fail most often.
“Texans Can Academies greatly appreciates the generous support of our donors so that we may open our doors again this year to all students who need help mastering these core subjects. We believe every child deserves the highest quality education available,” said Richard Marquez, president and CEO of Texans Can Academies. “Each day in our schools we see what that extra little push and attention from adults can do to inspire students to master this core content.”
TEA offers retesting of all four TAKS tests July 9-13 at students’ home campuses. Students return to the schools they last attended to retake the tests and their completion statistics will be credited to their home campus.
Registration for the individualized teaching is open at every campus or by calling 866-835-5437. Students will need a current student identification or social security number to complete their registration.
Certified teachers are also being recruited who are specialists in the four TAKS subject areas: math, science, English and social studies. Teachers who are interested in applying to teach during this four-week period please call 214-944-1960 or visit www.texanscan.myexacthire.com.
