From left to right students Jordan Rodriguez and Alexander Moreno count change.

Students at Plummer Elementary School collected thousands of dollars in change to help find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. The students were able to raise $3,195 after spending a week collecting change for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Pasta for Pennies campaign. The students selected this charity because blood cancers such as leukemia, strikes more children and young adults under the age of 20 than any type of cancer.

On collection day Plummer students in every class used their math skills to count up the change. Then Plummer first grade teacher Rachel Kelton roller-skated up and down the hallways pushing a collection box on a chair as students proudly contributed the change collected from their classes.

The theme song from Rocky rang across the school loudspeaker while Miss Kelton led the Pasta for Pennies Parade. Miss Kelton wore a safety helmet and her students suggested that she strap on a pillow for safety. “They were sweet enough to get a pillow from the reading center so it wouldn’t hurt myself if I fell down!” Kelton said.

“Throughout the Pasta for Pennies campaign, the students and staff of Plummer Elementary have been collaborating for the cause and have continued to impress me with their character,” added Miss Kelton who coordinated the school event.

“Their caring, generosity and thoughtfulness is unparalleled with anything I have ever encountered. I am excited for the future with these outstanding citizens leading the way. I am proud and thankful to be a Plummer Lil’ horn!” Lashonda Henderson and Jo Lewis-Gray fourth grade classes raised the most money and were treated to an Olive Garden pasta lunch February 24th.
