Organizers for the World AIDS Day Dallas event announced today that Dallas Cowboys’ tight end Martellus Bennett will take part in and speak at the Thursday, December 1 event. Bennett will join community leaders and activists from around Dallas at 7:30 p.m. in Main Street Garden in Downtown Dallas. The theme of World AIDS Day is “getting to zero” — zero new infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths. The hour-long event features inspiring speakers and powerful music. Local restauranteur and community leader Monica Greene will speak, along with Anthony Chisom, founder of the Anthony Chisom AIDS Foundation. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins and Dallas City Councilmember Angela Hunt will be on hand to present proclamations from the county and city, respectively.

The evening will open with an invocation by Cantor Don Kroll from Temple Shalom, and close with words from Pastor Doris G. Deckard, founder of the Church of the Solid Rock. The Women’s Chorus of Dallas and the African drum ensemble from Booker T. Washington High School will provide music for the evening.

Aiming to elevate the public’s knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS, and confront the stigma surrounding the disease, the Greater Than AIDS movement will participate with videos and a photo booth where individuals can share their “Deciding Moment” — a personal decision to take a stand against HIV and to be greater than the disease. Six panels from theAIDS Memorial Quilt, with quilt panels of Dallas residents who passed away due to HIV/AIDS, will also be available for viewing and reflection.

Finally, local HIV/AIDS organizations and community groups will be on hand with information on HIV prevention, care, and treatment.

The event is free and open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to come early to view the Quilt, participate in the “Deciding Moments” photo booth, and meet local organizations working in the HIV/AIDS community.
