Local Dallas business owner and community leader, Terry Allen, CE0 of 1016 Media and Director of the Business Assistance Center, Inc., has received the nomination for the NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) Salute to Excellence Award for Public Relations. The nomination is a result of his award winning work with Real Men Cook and winners will be announced Saturday, August 6, 2011 at a gala celebration during NABJ’s 36th Annual Convention and Career Fair in Philadelphia. The convention is the largest gathering of minority journalists in the country.
Hosts for this year’s gala will be Jacque Reid, reporter and analyst for The Tom Joyner Morning Show and Kevin Frazier, co-host of The Insider. The award category was created to honor NABJ member and BPRS Founder, The late Patricia L. Tobin.
Pat Tobin of Los Angeles passed away in 2008. She was president and CEO of Tobin and Associates, a prominent minority, woman-owned public relations firm. She was a dedicated activist for causes that impacted minorities, women and youth; and was co-founder of the National Black Public Relations Society.
“Pat Tobin and Yvette Moyo were instrumental in my company obtaining the Real Men Cook project in 1999 and Ms. Tobin has mentored me on several projects all throughout my career which makes this namesake nomination a personal honor for me,” says Allen. ” For 11 years I have showcased men of color in a positive light and save lives with our health and wellness screenings,” Allen says.
Allen is a long time member of NABJ and Co-Chair of the Associated Member Task Force. As a Co-Chair of the NABJ Associate Member Task force he had a key role in developing two media institutes for NABJ in New York and Washington, D.C. which included PR Guru and Author Terrie Williams and PR Expert Karen Taylor Bass (Brand New Mom/Chief Mom track).
He also developed and executed several NABJ panels for the past five NABJ National Conventions including topics centering around the reinvention and transition of journalists to public relations and non-profit and public sector media related employment. He is also the chair of the Fundraising Committee for The Dallas-Fort-Worth Association of Black Journalists.
