The Lamplighter Board of Trustees and the Head search committee are pleased to announce Joan Hill as the new Lamplighter Head of School. Hill will begin her appointment with the 2011-12 school year.

Most recently, Hill served 11 years as Lower School Head at the Columbus School for Girls in Columbus, Ohio. She is currently completing her second of three years in a doctoral program (EdD) in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania with a particular focus on educational leadership.

“I am excited to lead the Lamplighter School,” said Hill. “Lamplighter faculty possess the unique ability to offer hands-on, relevant instruction that prepares children for a globally connected 21st century, while preserving the rich history that includes a farm!” Hill was raised outside Cleveland, Ohio, and received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio University in Athens, and a master’s degree at John Carroll University.

“Lamplighter School offers the premier preschool and elementary experience,” she said. “It is well-known for its innovation in technology and in instructing the youngest learners.” “We interviewed many outstanding candidates, but Joan’s calm, graceful demeanor set her apart,” said Alex Sharma, Head search committee chair, the Lamplighter School.

“The more we talked, the more we understood how beautifully her child-centric educational philosophy meshed with Lamplighter’s. It is an exciting time at our school, and we have a true life-long learner to lead our children.”

Mrs. Hill and her husband, Zachary, will make their move to Dallas this summer. Their two children: son, Zachary, 27, graduated from Fisk University in Nashville, and works for Marriott; daughter, Leslie, 25, is a Wellesley graduate and works in development with Broad Academy and its Foundation.

“Joan’s warmth, coupled with her wisdom and knowledge of how children should be educated in this challenging era, make her a perfect leader for Lamplighter,” said Judy Gass, Interim Head of the Lamplighter School. “The Lamplighter children are fortunate to have such a talented educator taking the helm. I am thrilled for the school and for her, and anticipate that her tenure here will be the crowning achievement in her already stellar career.”

The Lamplighter School was founded in 1953 in a farmhouse on Churchill Way. Today’s educational compound on twelve acres in north Dallas has an enrollment of nearly 450 pre-K through fourth grade students. It is made up of thirty classrooms, a fine arts complex, a media center, a premier early childhood health and fitness facility, a greenhouse, and a barn. Lamplighter remains committed to its founding educational mission, while it develops new ways to light the lamps of its students.
