Dallas South News Wire (Rep. Yvonne Davis)

State Representative Yvonne Davis and other members of the Texas Legislature have scheduled a press conference for Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. (or upon adjournment) in the Speaker’s Committee Room (State Capitol, 2W.6).  They will identify revenue sources to restore funding for education, health care, skills training, infrastructure, and other essential services necessary to maintain the State’s prosperity and economic growth.

Rep. Yvonne Davis filed House Bill 2434 requiring the elimination of over 125 exemptions on October 1, 2011.  The legislation will eliminate exemptions of certain sales, property, franchise and motor vehicle sales taxes.  House Bill 2434 will require businesses to pay their fair share, which the Comptroller estimates to be over $32 billion.  It is unfair for major corporations to enjoy record breaking growth and profit margins without paying.  Citizens/consumers can no longer shoulder the entire budget deficit.  Everyone must come to the table!

“As stewards of our state’s fiscal matters, we must look to all available sources to secure sufficient revenues, including any funds remaining in the Rainy Day Fund, to provide a balanced approach in addressing the budget deficit.  Drastic cuts cannot be the only solution to address the budget crisis,” stated Rep. Yvonne Davis.

House Bill 2434 provides an opportunity to review and collect significant revenue that could help Texans move forward and out of this budget crisis. The proposed legislation would not impact exemptions provided by the federal or state constitutions.    These exemptions would remain intact.

Texas and Texans deserve a better approach!
