I’m really intrigued by the Salvation Army’s Cedar Crest Corp and Community Center. Before I sat down and talked with Sergeant Rodney Hinkle (Cedar Crest Corps Officer) I thought I knew who and what the Salvation Army was, but really I didn’t.
I mean back in the day my grandmother and I used to go out and browse at the Salvation Army or Goodwill weekly. And of course the Red Kettles at Christmas time, that’s pretty much it right? For whatever reason I haven’t thought as much about the “salvation” portion of the organization and the fact that each Corps is a church and the Corps Officers is a pastor.
Sergeant Hinkle and his wife Sergeant Juanita Hinkle have formed an Advisory Council at Cedar Crest that includes former Dallas Cowboys Charles Haley and Doug Dennsion. I look forward to sharing their story (hint: there aren’t very many African-American Corps Officers in this country) down the road, but today there’s a specific task at hand.
The Hinkles are seeking volunteers to help build a brand new KaBOOM! playground at their facility on March 11, 2011 from 9 am to 5 pm. If you are unfamiliar with the KaBOOM! concept, you should read our post about the Dolphin Heights playground built last year. The entire playground will be built in one day
It’s very important the members of the community take part in the build, an there’s a job for everyone. For more information about how you can help call the Cedar Crest Corps and Community Center at (CORRECTED) 214-941-7404
