Poynter, a school dedicated to teaching practitioners and teachers of journalism, announces the appointment of six new members to its National Advisory Board (NAB). Together, the new members bring to the Board experiences in traditional and new forms of journalism, as well as in academia – areas Poynter seeks to serve with its expanding number of training opportunities.

Those named to the Board are:

  • Philip Bennett, Eugene C. Patterson Professor, Duke University

Between 2005-2009, Bennett was Managing Editor of The Washington Post and has been an editor of international and national security coverage, a local news reporter and a foreign correspondent. His journalism career started at The Lima Times in Peru.

  • Martin Kaiser, Editor and Senior Vice President, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Kaiser has been Editor and Sr. VP of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel since 1997. Under his leadership, the Journal Sentinel won the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting in 2008 and 2010. The newspaper also was a finalist in the Explanatory Reporting category in 2010—the fourth time since 2003.

  • Mindy Marques Gonzalez, Executive Editor, The Miami Herald

Gonzalez began her journalism career at The Miami Herald in 1986. In 2002, she left the paper to become the Miami Bureau Chief for People Magazine, handling national breaking news, enterprise and celebrity coverage in the southeastern United States, the Caribbean and Latin American. Mindy returned to The Miami Herald in May 2007.

  • Amanda Michel, Director of Distributed Reporting, ProPublica.org

Under Michel’s direction, ProPublica’s crowdsourcing projects were recently honored with a Knight-Batten Special Distinction Award. Michel also directed Huffington Post’s OffTheBus, a ground-breaking citizen journalism site. Michel got her start working on political campaigns.

  • Mike Riley, Managing Editor, Bloomberg Government

Riley became Managing Editor of Bloomberg Government in 2010. Prior to that, he was the Editor and Senior Vice President of Congressional Quarterly from 2007 to 2009 and the editor of The Roanoke (Va.) Times from 1998 to 2007. He created and launched allpolitics.com, a leading political site founded by TIME magazine and CNN.

  • Shawn Williams, Editor, Dallas South News

Williams launched the nationally acclaimed DallasSouthBlog.com, now known as Dallas South, in June of 2006. In 2008, Dallas South was one of a select number of blogs to be awarded credentials for the Democratic National Convention. The website has been featured on NBC Nightly News, CNN, NPR and the BBC, among others.

Dr. Karen Dunlap, Poynter’s President, called the new members “a talented group of men and women who have committed to help Poynter stay in the forefront of serving journalism in the interest of democratic societies.”

“They join a National Advisory Board that challenges us, informs us and helps Poynter make the changes needed today,” she said.

Poynter’s NAB provides feedback to the Institute’s president throughout the year, members teach in Poynter courses, and the Board meets each January in St. Petersburg for two days of consultation with Poynter’s Trustees and staff. Board members generally serve a term of four years.

Continuing on the Board are:

  • Cory Bergman, Director, New Product Development, msnbc.com.
  • Sewell Chan, Washington Correspondent, The New York Times
