Dallas South News Wire (UNT Dallas)

The great grandson of the man who founded the Dallas Morning News on Oct. 1, 1885, will discuss his family’s legacy and the history of the newspaper and the city at the University of North Texas at Dallas from 3 – 4:30 p.m. Sept. 30.

Joe Dealey Jr., a member of the pioneer Dallas family, will answer questions about the city, the newspaper and the Dealey family’s legacy at the nation’s newest university.

The event is free and open to the public. It will take place in room 101 in the university’s new building (on the right as you enter the campus).

Dealey was a general assignments reporter, editorial staff writer and columnist for the newspaper and vice president of A.H. Belo Corp. before becoming director of public affairs for the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Board from 1984 – 1999. His media relations during two major crashes at the airport (Delta flight #191 in 1985 and Delta flight #1141 in 1988) is widely credited with changing the way airports deal with the media during major emergencies.

UNT Dallas President John Ellis Price says the idea for the question-and-answer session came after he met Dealey and Dallas Historical Society Executive Director Jack Bunning at City Hall at a Juneteenth celebration June 18. Bunning displayed the only known surviving copy of General Order No. 3, the document which informed citizens in Texas about the Emancipation Proclamation.

UNT Dallas librarian and archivist Leora Kemp and the school’s new history professor, Matthew Babcock, will interview Dealey. Attendees are invited to join the discussion and ask questions.

UNT Dallas is located at 7300 Houston School Road and one mile north of I-20 and one mile east of I-35E off Camp Wisdom.
