The 27th Annual Stephen Philbin Awards Luncheon will take place at the Belo Mansion on Tuesday October 12th at Belo Mansion. The Philbin Award recognizes excellence in legal reporting and is sponsored by the Dallas Bar Association Media Relations Committee.
According to the Dallas Bar Association website, The Stephen Philbin Awards were created in 1983 to honor the memory of Stephen H. Philbin, a long-time member of the Dallas Bar Association and a partner with the firm of Locke, Purnell, Boren, Laney & Neely. Mr. Philbin died in 1982 from leukemia at the age of 39.
Kenneth W. Starr, J.D., has had a memorable career in academia, the law and public service. As Solicitor General of the United States from 1989 to 1993, Mr. Starr argued 25 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. From 1994 to 1999, he was appointed to serve as Independent Counsel for five investigations, including Whitewater.
He is the author of more than 25 publications and has received numerous honors and awards, including the Jefferson Cup Award from the FBI and the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service.
Mr. Starr previously taught constitutional law as an adjunct professor at New York University School of Law and was a distinguished visiting professor at George Mason University School of Law and Chapman Law School. On February 12, 2010, he was unanimously elected as the 14th President of Baylor University.
