Dallas South Newswire (Mahagony Dance Theater)

The Amazing Grace Dance Production, created by the South Dallas-based Mahogany Dance Theatre will take to the Music Hall at Fair Park stage for the first time in the program’s history at 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 6, 2010.  In addition to Mahogany Dance Theatre dancers, the performance will feature youths who participated in the 2010 Amazing Grace Summer camps held at collaborative sites throughout Southern Dallas.

Amazing Grace was created, choreographed and produced by Vann Gilbert, founder of the     Mahogany Dance Theatre in collaboration with The St. Anthony Community Center’s Urban Arts-In-Education Initiative.  The Aug. 6 performance is presented by The Lucile W. and George R. Patullo Fund of The Dallas Foundation.

Amazing Grace is part of St. Anthony Community Center’s Urban Arts-In-Education Initiative, created to heighten awareness of the importance of keeping the arts alive in urban communities, especially in educational settings (via summer camps, schools and after-school programs).

St. Anthony’s Urban Arts-In-Education Initiative is helping to lay the groundwork so Dallas youths will have greater access to the arts, including dance and the opportunities that could await them if they decide to choose the arts as a future course of study.  Dance also offers important physical activity and is a viable alternative to sports which often seems to have greater relevance than the performing arts in schools.

The discipline taught through the arts, including dance, can also have a positive impact on academic study habits. (The pride and self-esteem built through this program can also positively impact the way participants pursue their academic studies.)

Tickets may be purchased at www.liveatthemusichall.com and  at all Ticketmaster outlets –           www.ticketmaster.com.  Tickets are affordably priced to encourage attendance during these economically challenging times.  Event organizers also encourage North Texans to help sponsor tickets for families of the featured youth dancers and for other young people who may have never attended a performance at the Music Hall.
