Last night the voters of Texas House 100 took matters in their own hands. Eric Johnson easily outpaced incumbent Terri Hodge though many tried to paint them as too apathetic or disengaged to do so. Residents of South Dallas and West Dallas were not as oblivious as political analysts and predictors had figured. And don’t think Johnson’s victory is only a factor of his opponents legal woes. He ran a credible and professional campaign from the start.
Johnson is an example of the new leadership that this city deserves no doubt. And why his Harvard credentials are seen as a liability by some is a wonder to me. We say we want young black men to achieve greatness, and in this case Mr. Johnson was told he should sit on the bench until the coach(es) told him it was time to get in the game. He will be the only African-American male in the Dallas delegation to the Texas House of Representatives.
Well the voters of Texas 100 said it was time to make a change, despite those who predicted Ms. Hodge would win, just not by the margin she was accustomed to. I look forward Mr. Johnson representing the people of District 100 as soon as possible. He should be sworn in as soon as the seat becomes vacant. He has earned the seat and the voters of Texas 100 say he deserves it.
