DALLAS (Jan. 8, 2010) – Dallas Theater Center will donate 100-percent of all ticket sales from the Friday, Jan. 15, Pay What You Can world premiere performance of the contemporary pop musical Give It Up! to DTC Resident Company Acting Member and Friday Night Lights star Liz Mikel, who tragically lost her home to a fire in the early morning hours of Jan. 7.

The first performance of Douglas Carter Beane’s and Lewis Flinn’s new musical, designated Pay What You Can, invites patrons to purchase tickets for any seat for any amount they are comfortable paying, with this particular production’s Pay What You Can performance benefiting a local artist and DTC family member in her time of need.

Mikel, best known for her role on NBC’s Friday Night Lights, is a popular actress and cabaret singer in the Dallas community, and is currently in rehearsals for DTC’s Give It Up!, which runs Jan. 15 – Feb. 14 at the Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre at the AT&T Performing Arts Center.

“DTC’s Pay What You Can initiative gives anyone in our community the opportunity to see live theater for a price that’s personally affordable to them, making great art available to virtually everyone regardless of their financial situation,” says DTC Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty.

“In the same spirit of community, one of the ways we want to show our support and take care of one of our city’s most vibrant artists and a DTC family member is by giving Liz the entire total of money from the Give It Up! Pay What You Can ticket sales to aid her in re-establishing a home and her life after such a profound loss.”

ABOUT GIVE IT UP!

Based on Aristophanes’ ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata, in which a group of women refuse to have sexual relations with their husbands until they end the Peloponnesian War. Beane and Flinn bring the classic tale of the battle of the sexes to a contemporary American college (Athens University) where Lysistrata Jones is the head cheerleader at a school where the basketball team is content to lose every game. Determined to inspire them to become winners and care for something more than themselves, the ladies decide to hold out on “giving it up” until their team breaks the 30-year losing curse by winning a game.
