“The Paper Ain’t For Us.”
That’s something that Willis Johnson said this morning on Soul 73 as he discussed the Dallas Morning News’ coverage of the Maxwell concert. Well actually, the lack of coverage of the Maxwell concert that went down at the American Airlines Center on Monday night.
If you do open the paper and more specifically the Guide Daily section, you see a half page photo of a stage resembling a longhorn with his horns sawed off inside a huge venue. On page 3E Maria Tarradell submits his review of the U2 Concert at Cowboys Stadium.

I’ll have to be honest, I knew U2 was coming to town, and I knew that it would be during the Cowboys bye week, but I didn’t know Monday night would be the day they raised the ginourmous big screen for Bono and the crew. It was when I flipped over to Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket that I realized that the concert was last night.
Craig “Junior” Miller and George “Jub Jub” Dunham (not an authorized nickname) went on and on about the concert as I would expect them to. There are few bigger Bono fans in North Texas than George and Craig. They’ve devoted a lot of air time over the years to U2 and have seen many of their shows. This morning they reported that Tony Romo, Tiger Woods, Peter King, Eva Longoria Parker, and many other high profile celebs were in Arlington Monday night.
But over at 730 AM it was a different story. Alisha “The Actress” was telling Willis about how great the Maxwell concert was. She said it was one of the best live shows that she had ever attended.
For months, some of my friends have patiently awaited Maxwell’s swing through D-Town. Some were catching him for a second time after seeing him perform at the Essence Festival back in July.
DallasSouthNews.org wasn’t able to secure a spot at the Maxwell concert. I’m not bitter (am I bitter?) but we never thought that much about it because we figured an American Airlines concert would get more than enough local coverage. DSN has covered Mos Def at House of Blues, and N’Dambi at Good Records, which probably makes more sense for us.
But I was still more than a bit surprised to see that Maxwell sort of fell through the cracks. Granted, Monday was one of the biggest entertainment days in quite some time here in Dallas. Oprah was at the State Fair (did you see her anchor the 5 o’clock news on WFAA 8?), the performing arts center officially came online, and then there were the two concerts. Looks like Maxwell just got bumped.
